First-Time Racer Checklist: What to Bring to the Track

First-Time Racer Checklist: What to Bring to the Track

Everything You Need for a Smooth First Race Day

You’ve got the car, the gear, and the adrenaline — now it’s time for your first race day. Whether you're hitting the track in a Bandolero, Legend Car, or Late Model, preparation is key to success (and sanity).

At Impel Motorsports, we know how overwhelming that first day can be. So, we’ve put together a race-day checklist to help first-time racers (and their families) stay organized, confident, and ready to roll.

Driver Essentials

Before you even fire up the engine, you’ll need to make sure you’re track legal and safe:

Racing Suit - SFI-Approved. Most racers opt for a multi-layer suit such as an SFI 3.2A/5 suit.

Helmet - SA2020 or Newer.

Racing Gloves & Shoes - Make sure these are SFI rated!

Neck Restraint - We recommend a HANS device.

Raceiver & Earbuds - Many tracks now require a raceiver to allow for one-way communication to the driver from the scoring tower.

Racing License or Track Registration

Tip: Double-check your local track’s rules for age-specific safety gear requirements, especially for youth divisions like Bandolero.

Race Car Readiness

Make sure your car is tech-inspection ready and set up for the conditions:

Top of Fuel

Charge your car's battery

Tires Checked & Pressures Set

Oil and Brake Fluids Topped Off

Transponder Charged & Installed

All Panels and Safety Components Secured

Toolbox with Wrenches, Sockets, Screwdrivers, and Pliers

Jack & Jack Stands

Tire Pressure Gauge

Don’t forget: Check that your numbers are clearly visible and comply with your track’s format.

Spare Parts & Maintenance Supplies

A few key spares and consumables can save your day if something goes sideways:

Extra Tires (if allowed or needed)

Extra Spark Plugs, Chain, or Sprockets

Brake Pads or Fluids

Tape & Zip Ties (you can never have enough!)

Oil & Filters

Fuses, Nuts & Bolts

Grab one of our Maintenance Kits to stay stocked up with the essentials between race weekends.

Pit & Comfort Items

Race day can be long and hot — make sure your pit setup is ready to keep you and your crew comfortable:

Pop-Up Tent or Canopy

Folding Chairs

Cooler with Drinks & Snacks

Towels or Rags

Sunscreen & Sunglasses

Rain Gear

Phone Charger or Portable Battery Pack

Pro Tip: A dedicated “race day bag” makes packing and unpacking much easier each week.

Paperwork & Prep

Don't leave home without these:

Track Registration or Entry Form (if not submitted online)

Driver ID or Credentials

Tech Sheet (some tracks require pre-filled)

Notebook for Notes or Setup Changes

Pen, Sharpie, and Ziplock Bags for receipts, spare parts, or tools

Mental Prep & Final Tips

Walk the track (if allowed) to get familiar with lines, banking, and surface.

Stay calm. Everyone’s first race is a learning experience.

Ask questions. Most fellow racers and officials are happy to help.

Document your day. Win or learn, your first race is a milestone worth capturing!

You’re Ready to Race!

Your first race day will be full of adrenaline, nerves, and excitement — but with the right preparation, it can also be smooth and successful.
