Prep Like a Pro — A First-Timer-Friendly Guide from Impel Motorsports
Bandolero racing is where many young drivers get their start — and learning the importance of car prep is a big part of that journey. Whether you're a driver, parent, or pit crew, this race-day maintenance checklist will help you avoid mechanical issues and stay focused on the fun (and the finish line!).
At Impel Motorsports, we work with Bandolero racers across the country and know what it takes to get through race day with confidence. Here’s everything you should check before you hit the track.
Daily Maintenance Must-Dos
These should be checked before every single race. They’re your first line of defense against breakdowns or DNFs:
Chain Tension & Condition – Ensure proper slack and look for tight spots or kinks
Sprockets – Inspect for worn or sharp teeth and tighten all bolts
Tire Pressure – Adjust for track conditions and driver preference
Oil Level & Cleanliness – Top off or change if it’s dark, dirty, or smells burnt
Battery Charge – A low battery = no start. Keep it fully charged
Throttle Response – Smooth and snappy? Make sure there’s no sticking
Brakes – Check for firmness, wear, and fluid level
Body Panels – Make sure they’re securely fastened (especially the nose and rear bumper)
Nuts & Bolts – Walk around the car and snug down anything that might vibrate loose
Tip: Use a paint pen or torque marker to quickly spot if anything has shifted since the last check.
Weekly/Between-Race Maintenance
On race weeks, go a bit deeper with your checks and cleaning:
Change the Oil – Fresh oil protects your Briggs & Stratton engine
Clean Air Filter – A dirty filter restricts airflow and performance
Check Spark Plug – Clean or replace if fouled or worn
Lubricate Chain – Use a high-quality chain lube designed for racing
Inspect Frame & Welds – Look for cracks or damage, especially after contact
Flush & Replace Brake Fluid (every few races or if it looks dark)
Need the basics? Our Bandolero Maintenance Kits include the core components you need to stay ready all season long.
Tires & Setup
Handling can make or break your race — don’t overlook the importance of proper setup:
Tire Pressures Set for Conditions – Talk with your crew chief or other racers to get a baseline
Tire Wear Pattern – Uneven wear could mean alignment or camber issues
Stagger – Check your front and rear stagger with a tape or stagger gauge
Scuff or Clean Tires – Fresh tires need to be scrubbed in; old tires might need debris removed
Pro Insight: Consistent tire pressure readings across the day help you stay ahead of track condition changes.
Safety Checks
Many tracks won’t let you on the track if these aren’t dialed in — and for good reason.
5-Point Harness in Good Condition – No frays or expired labels
Seat Bolted Securely – Check all four mounting points
Fuel Tank Secured and Not Leaking
Fire Extinguisher in Trailer – Even if not required, it’s a must-have safety tool
Helmet, Suit, Gloves, Shoes, and Neck Restraint – SFI-rated and fitted properly
